Baltimore City Department of Transportation - Operation Orange Cone

On April 2, 2008, Mayor Sheila Dixon and Department of Transportation Director, Al Foxx announced the start of the Operation Orange Cone 2008, a major citywide campaign designed to highlight the increased number of construction projects earmarked this season. In 2007, the campaign helped set a record for completed construction projects by more than doubling the total lane miles repaved and repaired in 2006.

The campaign will focus on resurfacing, milling and paving city roads, bridges and footways as well as creating streetscapes. Last year, the city paved an impressive 139 lane miles with an additional 51 lane miles underway at the end of the year. This year, the city has set a goal to complete 200 lane miles of repaving, representing the most significant capital improvement season in years and the most substantial increase of milling and paving projects ever.

“Last year, Operation Orange Cone was a major success for Baltimore,” said Mayor Dixon. “Challenging ourselves to do better required finding a new way of coordinating our resources to make road construction more efficient. This year we are going to build on our success and take Orange Cone to another level.”

In April 2007, Mayor Dixon announced Operation Orange Cone and the goal of doubling the number of lane miles that were repaved and repaired the previous year. By the end of the 2007 construction season, DOT completed more than 180 lane miles, more than doubling the construction total from 2006 and setting a new standard for future road construction campaigns.

“From day one, we have been working to build a cleaner, greener, safer and healthier Baltimore,” added Mayor Dixon. “I hope that with the success of Operation Orange Cone, I can now add ‘smoother’ to the list.”

Updated OOC information for 2009:

"We have had two consecutive seasons of successful roadway repairs" said Mayor Dixon. "This construction season we will continue to challenge ourselves to find better ways to utilize resources and stablize spending while improving and repairing our roadways". The Department of Transportation's goal will remain at 200 lane miles to be completed this 2009 season. Please follow our progress.
