Keeping the City’s transportation infrastructure in good, safe condition is the Department’s highest funding priority; maintaining a regular schedule of street resurfacing, bridge rehabilitation and preventive maintenance on traffic control devices and support facilities will avoid the large cost of reconstructing those facilities. Project funding decisions are based on asset management and economic development opportunities. While a need and desire will always exist to invest in new transportation system capacity, the Department’s capital program is focused on adequately maintaining the roads, bridges and facilities which are already in place. Doing so makes more communities attractive for private investment and yields long-term capital program savings.
