All recreation centers will be closed Monday February 8th and Tuesday February 9th, 2010 as a result of inclement weather.
The Baltimore region was hit with a significant snow storm this weekend that dumped approximately 26 inches of snow on the city. The City of Baltimore wants to assure residents that its top priority will be to clear primary and secondary roadways. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use extreme caution while traveling this weekend, as slippery conditions may exist.
Phases I and II of the Snow Emergency Plan are now in effect in Baltimore City. This means that all vehicles traveling on city roadways must be equipped with snow tires, all weather radials or chains. In additon, parking is prohibited along designated Snow Emergency Routes. Vehicles that are parked along these designated routes will be relocated. Citizens with questions concerning the location of their vehicles should call 311.
During this Phase II snow emergency, additional parking has been made availble for citizens at designated schools equipped with parking lots. These schools include:
- Western High School at the corner of Falls Road and Coldspring Lane
- Walbrook High School at 2000 Edgewood Street
- Thomas G. Hayes Elementary School at 601 N. Central Avenue
- William Pinderhughes Elementary at 1200 N. Fremont Avenue
- Patterson High School at 100 Kane Street
- Thurgood Marshall Middle School at 5000 Truesdale Avenue and Moravia Road
- The Edmondson Westside Skill Center on Athol Avenue
- Francis Scott Key Elementary at 1425 E. Fort Avenue
- Digital Harbor High School at Covington and Cross Streets
- Thomas Johnson Elementary at 100 E. Heath Street (parking lot in rear)
- Locust Point Recreation Center located at Fort Avenue and Andre Street
Citizens may also park at the following locations:
- M&T Bank Stadium lot F
- Park roadways inside Patterson Park (please park on asphalt surfaces only )
The Parking Authority of Baltimore City would like to notify residents in Federal Hill, Fells Point, Little Italy, Mount Vernon, Locust Point and South Baltimore that they may park their vehicles in neighborhood City-owned parking facilities during this Phase II snow emergency. Parking is free in these garages until Tuesday morning, February 09, 2010 and is available on a 'first come, first served’ basis. Parking your vehicles in these garages will assist the City with its snow removal efforts.
The garages offering free parking during this Phase II snow emergency include:
- Little Italy Parking Garage - 400 S. Central Avenue
- Federal Hill/West Street Garage - 40 E. West Street
- Lower level of the Marina Garage (Rusty Scupper) - 402 Key Highway
- Caroline Street Garage - 805 S. Caroline Street
- Fleet and Eden Garage - 501 S. Eden Street
- Franklin Street Garage - 15 W. Franklin Street
- Penn Station Parking Garage - 1511 N. Charles Street
Please do not park on the roofs at any of these locations. Citizens may park in any other area of the garages, regardless of ‘Reserved’ signs posted during this period.
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake announced that City government will be open for business on Monday, February 08, 2010 starting at 10:00 with liberal leave in effect for non-essential employees. City employees and residents are encouraged to use public transportation. City government has worked closely with the MTA to restore transit service with great success. Residents may call the MTA Information Center at (410) 539-5000 or visit the MTA website at www.mta.maryland.gov to obtain route and service information.
Baltimore City Public Schools and central offices will be closed on Monday, February 08, 2010. Custodians, grounds and repair shop personnel, education building supervisors, and area facility managers must report to work to assist with snow removal.
Please note that the Charm City Circulator will not be operating on Sunday, February 07, 2010. Service is scheduled to resume at 12:00 noon on Monday, February 8, 2010.
