Historical & Architectural Preservation / Major Accomplishments

  • CHAP and Preservation Division reviewed and approved 567 permits for new rehabilitation projects in 31 historic districts, a significant increase above previous six years.
  • Commissioners (as volunteers) and staff provided approximately 6,000 hours of technical preservation expertise to permit applicants and the citizens of Baltimore.
  • Coordinated “Certified Local Government” review of National Register nominations for: East Monument & Edmondson National Register Historic Districts, and Hebrew Orphan Asylum.
  • Baltimore City's Historic Restorations and Rehabilitations Tax Credit generated a cumulative $460 million in investment in City historic properties. In 2010, 99 projects certified, yielding more than $ 21 million. More than 800 restorations underway in most of the 78 historic districts throughout the City. An additional $600 million in investment can be expected upon current project completions.
  • The Edgar Allan Poe House (operated by CHAP) and Visit Baltimore honored by the State of Maryland Office of Tourism for the exceptional promotion of the Edgar Allan Poe Bicentennial in 2009, resulting in $1.9 million in advertising equivalency and 426 travel articles. Poe House identified on many “top 10 lists” as a major Baltimore attraction.
  • Upon CHAP's recommendation, the Sharp-Leadenhall Historic District was designated by the Mayor & City Council.
  • Provided preservation component for Seton Hill and South Clifton Park, as well as city-wide plans including Red Line, Sustainability and Transform Baltimore.
  • Assisted Baltimore Heritage Area and helped to develop plan for War of 1812 Bicentennial Celebration.
  • Completed 100 telecommunications reviews, 400 project reviews and programmatic neighborhood reviews, in accordance with Federal and State Section 106 requirements.
  • Completed conservation of 28 City-owned public monuments, including all sculpture on Mount Vernon Place, “Negro Heroes of the United States” National Monument, Maryland Line Monument, Martin Luther/Lake Montebello, “On the Trail” Clifton Park, Lee-Jackson and Johns Hopkins.
