Mayor Rawlings-Blake Celebrates Progress in Neighborhood Paving Initiative
New paving machine allows City to improve more roadways in Baltimore neighborhoods.
This morning, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was joined by Councilwoman Rochelle “Rikki” Spector, Department of Transportation Director Khalil Zaied, residents, and community leaders to announce progress being made in the City’s neighborhood paving initiative. Despite budget constraints, the City has been able to increase the number of lane miles completed throughout the city. This year, 94.39 lane miles have been completed, compared to 84.52 lane miles at this same time last year—a 12 percent increase.
“I want to thank the Department of Transportation for working with stakeholders to pave more neighborhood roads than ever before without slowing down business or disturbing residents’ daily lives,” said Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. “By using our resources effectively and efficiently, we can improve roads in every neighborhood in the city. In fact, this year, more than 90 percent of all lane repaving has been done outside of the downtown area.”
Traditional resurfacing of the city’s major roadways is now completed by contractors. However, the Department of Transportation Maintenance Division has trained and developed over 30 City employees to mill and pave roadways throughout communities.
“Training our own employees and investing in a new paving machine will allow us to keep Baltimore roads smooth and safe throughout our communities,” said Director Zaied.
