Mayor Rawlings-Blake Commemorates Transgender Day of Remembrance

Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was joined by Reverend David Carl Olson, Minister, First Unitarian Church of Baltimore and community members to announce Baltimore-area events to commemorate the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“The Transgender Day of Remembrance gives us the opportunity to raise public awareness of crimes against transgender people and to honor the lives of those who are too often forgotten,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “Transgender people in Baltimore and throughout the region are sons, daughters, parents, and friends—and deserve our love and kindness.”

The first Transgender Day of Remembrance was held in San Francisco in 1999 in memory of Rita Hester, whose unsolved murder occurred on November 28, 1998. A tradition for the Baltimore memorial is the reading of the names of all who have been murdered or died from lack of proper medical care due to sexual identity or expression.

This year, two events will take place at the First Unitarian Church of Baltimore. The Transgender Day of Celebration will take place on Saturday, November 19, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The following day, November 20, the 13th annual Transgender Day of Remembrance will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Both events offer an opportunity for people to come together to discuss challenges facing the community and honor the victims of violence and bias.
