Mayor Rawlings-Blake Bets Boston Mayor Thomas Menino that the Ravens Will Win AFC Championship

The “Seafood Smackdown” highlights the availability of fresh and local foods at Baltimore’s public markets and neighborhood farmer’s markets.

Confident that the Baltimore Ravens will defeat the New England Patriots in Sunday’s AFC Championship game in Massachusetts, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake agreed to a friendly wager with Boston Mayor Thomas N. Menino. Mayor Menino and Mayor Rawlings-Blake serve together as Chair and Vice-Chair of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Food Policy Task Force respectively. The mayors discussed their predictions for Sunday’s game prior to a task force meeting in Washington, D.C.

“The Ravens, with their dominant defense and elite offensive weapons look stronger than ever, and I am excited to watch them win the AFC Championship on Sunday,” said Mayor Rawlings-Blake. “This week, in addition to showcasing the two best football teams in the NFL, Mayor Menino and I are proud to bring attention to some of greatest food in the country with this seafood smackdown—and I look forward to seeing it delivered to Baltimore City Hall next week.”

In accordance with the terms of the wager, the mayor of the losing team must send the other mayor food that is unique to their city. Mayor Rawlings-Blake agreed to send a platter of broiled crab cakes from J. W. Faidley Seafood in Baltimore’s historic Lexington Market. Legendary New York Times food critic R.W. Apple once called Faidley’s crab cakes “the single best crab cake in Baltimore, if not the Western Hemisphere.” Lexington Market is part of a network of public markets and farmers’ markets that provides fresh, local foods and healthy produce options to thousands of Baltimore’s families.

“I’m confident in the Patriots. They put together a great team that works well together on the field, but of course we all need to stay focused on the game at hand,” said Mayor Menino, who is wagering a gourmet lobster dinner from a popular Boston restaurant. “I hope to be enjoying some Baltimore crab cakes when it’s over.”
