Office of the Mayor - Mayoral Fellowship

Fellowship Dates: June 9 - August 15, 2008

What dates will the Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship be hosted?

June 9th through August 15, 2008. If you are accepted and need to arrive a few days late for a valid reason we are willing to work with your schedule.

Do Fellows receive a stipend?

Stipends are provided to all Fellows. In years past, the stipend ranged from $3,500 to $4,500. The stipend is paid out in increments on the city’s regular pay schedule and is subject to normal taxation. If your school has a stipend supplement program, we are also willing to work with your school.

How does the placement process work?

On the application, we request three preferred agency/department placements (in order of preference). Additionally, city agencies or departments who would like a Mayoral Fellow submit a detailed application called a “Request for Fellow (RFF)” which gives a project abstract, list of responsibilities, and expected outcomes for the agency or department and the Fellow. Only the most robust and challenging RFFs are accepted to ensure that Fellows are engaged and are exposed to high level projects and senior government officials. The Admissions team then meets and matches your requests with the Department requests. Once the match is made, a member of the admissions team will brief you on your placement and make sure it matches your interests for the summer. In the event that a placement does not match your interests, to the extent possible, we will make every effort to have you placed on a more suitable project.

What will I gain from this Fellowship experience?

The Fellowship provides unparalleled access to the inner workings of city government. In addition to the opportunity to manage and report on a major project for the city, the Baltimore City Mayoral Fellowship offers candid weekly discussions with major figures from the public, private, and non-profit sectors, an amazing peer network, tours of major Baltimore attractions, and the opportunity for tremendous personal and professional development.

What will a typical week consist of for a Mayoral Fellow?

A work week can require 40 to 60 hours of work from a Fellow depending on the demands of the project at a given time.

Most weeks also have at least one and sometimes two Fellowship events that take place during normal work hours (e.g. Brownbag lunch, Development Tour, CCTV Tour, Outward Bound, etc.). Additionally, a weekly evening event is also scheduled for Fellows (e.g. Mixers, Baseball Game, Dinner, Cookout, etc.). Overall, the Fellowship is designed to introduce Fellows to the rigors of public service while giving them an opportunity to experience all that the City of Baltimore has to offer.

Will parking passes be provided for the Fellows?

The Fellowship does provide parking vouchers for Fellows working in City Hall. City Hall and most city agencies and departments are within a 10 minute walk. Public transportation is also available which services all additional points of interest in and around the City of Baltimore.
