Headed by the Chief of Fire, the Baltimore City Fire Department serves a geographic area of 81 square miles and a population of more than 636,000. It is made up of seven divisions including fire suppression- which includes 2 divisions, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Information Technology and Communications, Fire Marshall’s Office, Training Division and Administrative Services. Since 2003, the department has responded to an average of 235,808 emergency 911 calls per year.

The Fire Department and CitiStat both track injuries by type. This allows the Agency and the City to focus on problem areas and come up with solutions that will improve the safety of the work environment. The Fire Department has had a recent increase in injuries due to slips, trips and falls. To help prevent future injuries, Fire Department supervisors are going to be specifically trained in preventing slips, trips and falls.
