Public Works Museum - Programs

Baltimore Public Works Museum programs strive to cultivate an understanding of public works history and how it relates to today’s public projects and services effecting and enhancing our everyday lives. Whether you choose to visit the Museum, attend one of our special events or participate in one of our community outreach activities there is something challenging and fun for everyone.

Educational Tour Programs

The following 'Tour Programs' are part of our regular schedule and are approximately 1 hour in duration. If the age or grade level of your tour group or area of interest varies, our Education Department is very willing to work with you to tailor a tour that meets your group’s special interests or needs.* All tours, except “Water Works!”, are available 7 days a week.

Baltimore: Then and Now

Primarily geared toward 3rd - 8th grade students, this program offers a unique overview of the history of public works as well as a representation of the modern day services they represent.

Water Works! Curriculum Tour

Prior to your Museum tour teachers are sent our Teacher Packet with lesson plans which provides teachers suggested pre and post visit activities that build upon the educational experience given during the Museum tour. While at the Museum students will have the benefit of a Docent’s presentation, participate in a water testing experiment, view an interesting public works history video and so much more. Available M-F only.

Summer Camp Groups

Camp groups are offered the same high quality educational experience as school tours. In addition they may also utilize the picnic area adjacent to the Streetscape Exhibit for hands on activities (weather permitting) as well as accommodating a leisurely lunch.

Senior Groups

Come relive your childhood experiences! Seniors enjoy visiting as part of their daily enrichment program and share the rich history of their past as well as learn about the future of the city and its environment.

Special Interest for Teachers

Teachers are encouraged to visit the Museum FREE throughout the year and utilize any of the resources we have available. Use of these resources will enable teachers to prepare lesson plans on specific environmental and historical subjects.

*Please note Museum school programs: (1.) Enhance classroom learning goals, (2.) Meet statewide performance goals. (3.) Present multiple interactive experiences, and (4.) Inspire students to be tomorrows’ leaders in Science, Technology and Social Studies.

Special Events

Throughout the year the Museum is host to a variety of fun and educational special events and community outreach activities. Here are a few annual events to watch for, so mark your calendar and come join in.

“Heavy Metal: Big Truck Day”

Heavy Metal takes on new meaning Saturday, October 6th from 10am to 2pm at the Baltimore Public Works Museum when the super BIG trucks of Baltimore’s fleet roll up to the Museum for a day of discovery. Come for a day of FREE fun-filled activities which includes the Truck Trail Game--an opportunity to sit in, explore and learn about all kind of cool trucks, join in Maryland Public Television’s Bob the Vid-Tech show and other creative activities. Rain or Shine.

ARTSCAPE

Located in the Kid’s Craft Area. Kids of all ages can use their creativity to make ‘beautiful birds’ from recycled materials easily found around the home. All materials needed are supplied for this FREE take home piece of art. Make more art, not trash!

BALTIMORE BOOK FESTIVAL

The history of public works is fascinating and yours to translate into a fanciful mask for storytelling. Decorate your mask with all kinds of appropriately interesting recycled materials. Come join in the FREE for ALL fun on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from noon to 5 p.m. at the Kid’s Activity Area adjacent to the Washington Monument. BLACK HISTORY MONTH

The Museum is pleased to reach out to the community with a special event commemorating Black History Month. Each year we offer a unique approach to entertain, educate and inform visitors. Among our most popular programming is the age old tradition of “Griot Storytelling” as pictured here.
