Department of Public Works - Recreation at Reservoirs

Safeguarding our reservoirs

We believe, and most of you agree, that Baltimore City has the best-tasting, clearest, purest drinking water in the country. The Baltimore City Department of Public Works is committed to keeping it that way. DPW has stewardship of the watersheds of Loch Raven, Prettyboy and Liberty Reservoirs. It protects these vital supplies of our drinking water and provides a natural environment for recreation

Altogether, DPW oversees 477 square miles of watershed. With the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the City works to identify species of fish, aids in documenting natural reproduction and helps in some stocking in certain areas. Within the three reservoirs, 44 species of fish, from Banded Killifish to Yellow Perch, can be found.

Boating and fishing on our reservoirs are favorite pastimes for many and call for special responsibilities by participants. Every year, DPW publishes a booklet with useful information for boaters and anglers. For more information or to order a copy of the 2007 Boating & Fishing Guide, please contact: Reservoir Natural Resources Section, 5685 Oakland Road, Eldersburg, Maryland 21784-6828.
