"Promoting International cultural, educational and economic exchanges with Baltimore City."

The Baltimore Sister City Committees operate under the auspices of the Office of the Mayor of Baltimore City and Sister Cities International for the purpose of strengthening partnerships between Baltimore City and international communities. The committees strive to build global cooperation at the municipal level, promote cultural understanding and stimulate economic development. Through volunteers, the committees motivate and empower private citizens, municipal officials and business leaders to conduct long-term sister city programs.

Baltimore is presently Sister Cities with 11 different thriving cities around the globe.

Alexandria, Arab Republic of Egypt

Location: North west coast of Egypt, on the Mediterranean Sea. It is 140 miles from Cairo.
Population: 3.5 to 5 million

Port: Egypt’s largest seaport. Port of Alexandria is Egypt’s major port. Alexandria was the first port in Egypt.

Professional Sports teams: Soccer is the main sport in Alexandria and in much of Northern Africa as well. Alexandria has four major stadiums: Borg El Arab Stadium, Harras El-Hedoud Stadium, Alexandria Stadium and El-Krom Stadium.

  • Bibliotheca Alexandrina is a new library since 2002. It was built in hopes of reviving the Royal Library of Alexandria. The Royal Library was once the largest Library in the world but was destroyed.

Ashkelon, Israel

Population: 117,000
Language: Hebrew and Arabic are the official languages. English is a semi- official language.

Bremerhaven, Germany

Location: North Sea coast of Germany, between the rivers Weser and Geeste
Population: 116,241 – largest German city on the North Sea coast
Language: German
Government: Republic. Bremerhaven has currently a coalition government with the Social Democrats and the Christian Democrats

Port: Port of Bremerhaven – “Bremenports”. One of the most important German ports, responsible for most of its trade with  Baltimore. Played large role in the  history of immigration to the US -  over 2 million people emigrated from Bremerhaven to Baltimore between 1832 and 1974.
Exports: Automobiles, seafood.  Bremerhaven ranks second in Europe’s car. Imports  and exports and is a  major business partner with Baltimore.

Professional Sports teams: Home to the basketball team; Eisbären Bremerhaven and the Hockey team; Fischtown Pinguins.
Fun Fact: Every five years Bremerhaven is host to ‘Sail Bremerhaven”, a one-week long international gathering of ocean-going sailing vessels and “Windjammers”.  Up to 250 ships from over 20 nations participate,  including our “Pride of Baltimore II” –  which has her own dock  “The Baltimore Pier”.    The next event is in 2010.

Gbarnga, Liberia

Population: estimated at about 3.2 million
Language: Their Official language is English however only about 20% of the population speaks English. There are 28 different indiginous languages and dialects spoken.

Port: Xiamen Seaport is a natural deepwater port located at the mouth of the Jiulong River. At year-end 2006 it was the 7th largest port in China by total tonnage.

Professional Sports Teams: Xiamen Lanshi ("Blue Lions") is the city's professional soccer team. Xiamen also hosts an international marathon each March and an international dragon boat race every May or June.
