Operation PROTECT (Public Resources Organizing To Empower Community Together)
Operation PROTECT is a comprehensive approach to crime reduction within the City of Baltimore. Over the past two years the Safe Zone project has effectively lowered homicide and shooting rates in Baltimore neighborhoods. PROTECT is an expansion of this effort. In addition to enhanced law enforcement, city services are deployed into neighborhoods. Residents and community leaders will be asked to participate in maintaining a cleaner, greener, healthier and safer neighborhood. The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhoods works closely with the Mayor’s Office of Criminal Justice to coordinate neighborhood outreach efforts within Operation PROTECT.
Operation PROTECT is a six-week long community engagement initiative through which all City agencies coordinate resources and service delivery into a targeted community (the PROTECT area). The PROTECT area is a 1/4 mile area that surrounds the SAFE ZONE which is staffed and coordinated by the Baltimore Police Department.
Within the first two weeks of the initiative, the community is asked to identify at least two specific projects that the residents can take on with support from City agencies. Projects might include: vacant lot clean ups, planting and beautification projects, graffiti removal, park or playground restoration, building repair, etc.
City agencies, including the Health Department and the Housing Department, partner with the Baltimore City Department of Social Services and community groups conduct outreach through door-to-door canvassing and literature drops.
PROTECT concludes with a large-scale community block party and resource fair. The celebration includes free food and live entertainment and approximately 30 booths staffed by City agencies, State agencies, and local partners. The event is advertised via door-to-door outreach and radio commercials on 92 Q.
Operation PROCTECT initiatives have taken place throughout Baltimore City.
