Bicycling is a mode of transportation that is available to people of all ages and socio-economic levels. It is particularly efficient and convenient form of transportation in urban areas where destinations are closer together and parking is often difficult and expensive. Like the automobile, bicycling provides a high degree of independence, flexibility and freedom of choice relative to schedule and destinations. In addition, bicycles are good exercise and are a non-polluting form of transportation.
Baltimore is a non-attainment area for Ozone Air Pollution--encouraging citizens to ride bicycles will help the City comply with Federal Air Quality standards. Bicycling is also a popular recreational activity. Most major Cities have well developed bicycle and greenway trail networks, including Philadelphia, Chicago, Seattle and Washington, D.C.
To enhance and promote bicycling, the City of Baltimore created a Bicycle Master Plan in 2006. The Bicycle Master Plan is complete and available here and at all Enoch Pratt Library locations for public review. This Master Plan does the following:
