Baltimore, MD— Today, the Baltimore City Council sent a letter to Baltimore Gas and Electric calling for an oversight hearing into recent reports that raised grave questions about the safe and proper completion of pipeline safety work throughout the City.
The investigation, conducted by the Public Service Commission and reported by The Baltimore Banner, was prompted by concerns that a safety inspector had allegedly filed false safety reports over a long period of time.
The City Council’s hearing will be the second to explore the operations of BGE. In February, the City Council’s Committee on Legislative Investigations conducted an oversight hearing into BGE’s multi-year rate hikes and the impacts experienced by Baltimore residents. During that hearing, BGE executives frequently emphasized the role that pipeline safety projects play in determining rate plans, including the multi-year rate hike the City Council opposed in 2023.
