Our History

The Baltimore City Fire Department has a long and proud history of protecting the city.

Early Beginnings (1729 - 1858)

  • The Maryland General Assembly established the Town of Baltimore in 1729.
  • The first fire ordinance was enacted in 1747 to improve fire safety.
  • By the 1800s, volunteer fire companies were formed to protect against fires, but competition among them created challenges.
  • In 1858, the Baltimore City Fire Department was officially established as a professional, 153-member department.

The Great Baltimore Fire of 1904

One of the most significant events in BCFD history was the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, which:

  • Destroyed over 1,500 buildings in downtown Baltimore.
  • Posed major challenges, including water supply issues.
  • Led to improvements in fire prevention and building codes to prevent future disasters.

Modernization and Growth

Over the years, BCFD has continuously evolved and expanded:

  • Introduced motorized fire engines and advanced firefighting equipment.
  • Established specialized units, including:
    • Hazardous materials teams
    • Emergency medical services (EMS)
  • Played a key role in responding to natural disasters and public emergencies.
