Overview
Sharps Disposal Drop Boxes (SDDB) have been installed throughout the City of Baltimore to improve public health outcomes. Sharps Disposal Drop Boxes will visually demonstrate a compassionate approach to addressing substance use challenges, while spotlighting collaborative solutions in public health and community well-being.
The SDDB will provide a space for safe disposal of used syringes, help prevent needle-stick injuries and help reduce the risk of transmitting bloodborne pathogens. This is a key component of harm reduction strategies, and to help decrease the number of discarded syringes in public spaces. Overall, Sharps Disposal Drop Boxes contribute to a healthier community by promoting safety, reducing stigma, and providing essential resources for those in need.
What Kind of Sharps are Accepted?
Sharps Disposal Drop Boxes accepts used syringes associated with a broad spectrum of medical treatments and personal substance-use needs. Accepted items include insulin syringes, GLP-1 medications, (such as Ozempic), EpiPens, blood-collection or transfusion needles, injectable prescriptions, and syringes used for drugs or other substances. This service offers a safe anonymous disposal option that reduces injury risk and promotes a cleaner, safer environment.
If you are a community‑based organization, government agency, or a community association leader interested in hosting a sharps‑disposal drop box, please contact Tyler Shaw, Outreach and Engagement Administrator.
