Building Careers in Infrastructure
Baltimore is experiencing significant growth—from the construction of the Frederick Douglass Tunnel and the rebuilding of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, to the expansion of clean energy initiatives such as solar and wind, as well as ongoing development projects across the city, which includes "Reframe Baltimore’s" transformation of vacant properties.
These developments are expected to generate a substantial number of new employment opportunities.
Infrastructure Sector: Job Growth and Wage Outlook
According to labor market data, from 2022 to 2032, the infrastructure sector in Baltimore City is projected to add more than 1,000 jobs. These occupations offer a projected average wage of $32 per hour.
Preparing Residents for Infrastructure Careers
Since 2019, through a mix of local, state, and federal funding, the Mayor’s Office of Employment Development (MOED) has invested over $20 million to prepare Baltimore City residents for careers in today’s and tomorrow’s infrastructure sector jobs.
We connect people to career coaching, skills training, and essential support services like transportation assistance, financial empowerment and legal services, and more. We also offer wage subsidies to businesses that hire apprentices, helping grow opportunities across the city.
These training programs help people get certified as construction laborers, CDL drivers, welders, electricians, CNC machinists, HVAC and solar techs, operating engineers, and more.
A graduate of one such training program reported back:
"I read it was an opportunity to start a new career. I gained certifications that would help me grow in the career I was getting trained for.” He’s experiencing success in his new field and is feeling optimistic for future promotions. “My work is going great, I am learning a lot and my Foreman is answering all the questions I have about gas work. In about a year I can see myself moving up from a gas laborer to a level 4 gas mechanic."
