Overview

The infrastructure fee on your monthly water bill helps us pay for fixing and replacing parts of the water and sewer system. This includes things like pipes, treatment plants, and reservoirs. The fee depends on the size of your water meter — the bigger the meter, the higher the fee.

Most homes have a 5/8-inch or 3/4-inch meter. Some homes may need a 1-inch or larger meter if they have a sprinkler system for fire safety. The builder decides the meter size when the property is built. DPW does not choose the size.

If you think your meter is too big, you can ask to get a smaller one. But you must prove that the smaller size will still work for your home and any fire sprinkler system. A certified professional has to review and approve your request.

If your meter is 2 inches or smaller, a Registered Master Plumber must sign off. If it’s 3 inches or larger, a Licensed Professional Engineer must do it. You can check the Water Meter Reduction Information Sheet to learn how to start this process.
