BALTIMORE, MD (July 18, 2026) – The Baltimore City Department of Transportation advised motorists that road closures are in effect in the vicinity of N. Chester Street and Ashland Avenue due to a sinkhole involving significant utility damage, including a water main and storm drain.

At this time, Department of Public Works crews have taken steps to stop the flow of water and are assessing conditions at the site.  As crews prep for water utility repairs, the following roads are now closed to traffic with detours in effect:

  • N. Chester Street from Eager to Madison Streets 
  • Ashland Avenue from N. Collington to N. Castle Streets

Repairs to the damaged water utilities are expected to take multiple days to complete. Motorists traveling in this area should anticipate delays, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes.

Detour Routes:

Westbound Ashland Avenue traffic will be detoured south on N. Collington, west on Madison, north on Washington, back to Ashland.

Northbound Chester Street traffic will be detoured west on Madison, north on Washington, east on Eager, back to Chester.

Eastbound Ashland Avenue traffic will be detoured south on N. Castle, east on Monument, north on Washington, back to Ashland  

Southbound Chester Street traffic will be detoured west on Eager, south on Wolfe, east on Monument, back to Chester
