Request a Salt Box
Baltimore Salt Boxes are wooden boxes with lids that hold salt and sand. The Department of Transportation puts them out every fall to help people get ready for snow and ice in the winter.
During snowstorms, the city clears the main roads first—like streets that lead to hospitals, police stations, and schools. Roads are cleared by zones, one at a time.
The salt boxes are placed on steep hills or in small streets where big salt trucks can’t go. People can use the salt and sand to help melt ice and make the roads less slippery. Some neighbors even like to decorate the boxes!
