What to Expect During the Review Process

Once a location is selected for review, it goes through several steps:

  1. Eligibility and priority review
  2. Speed study
  3. Design of a proposed traffic calming solution
  4. Review by the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD)
  5. Community engagement
  6. Installation

A speed study checks if drivers are going too fast on a road. The results help decide which places need help the most. Then, traffic engineers make a plan to improve safety at those locations.

The proposed design is then reviewed by BCFD to ensure it will not interfere with emergency response. After BCFD approval, nearby residents have an opportunity to review the proposal and provide feedback. In some cases, community opposition may prevent or delay installation.

If the project is approved and funding available, DOT puts it on the installation schedule. DOT also checks it against other planned road work to make sure the work is done at the best time and in the right order.

Goals and Expectations

Each year, around October, DOT publishes a list of locations that have completed the review process and are scheduled for installation during the next construction season, which runs from March through November.

The list is shared with the Repave Baltimore project list and posted on the Traffic Calming Installations Dashboard so everyone can see where work is planned.
